Background
“What is This! Taro Okamoto Exhibition” (なんだ、これは! 岡本太郎展) is a major retrospective celebrating the 30th anniversary of the passing of Taro Okamoto, one of Japan’s most influential and provocative modern artists. Known for his explosive style and the famous mantra “Art is Explosion!”, Okamoto sought to create art that was accessible to everyone and challenged the traditional “high art” establishment.
The exhibition at the Kagoshima City Museum of Art features approximately 80 works, spanning from his early teen years to pieces created shortly before his death. Highlights include masterpieces such as The Wounded Arm and a study of his massive mural The Myth of Tomorrow. Simultaneously, the museum is hosting the “Taroman Grand Expo—Kagoshima Pavilion,” featuring the viral “Taroman” character inspired by Okamoto’s philosophy and 1970s tokusatsu aesthetics, making it a comprehensive celebration of his enduring cultural impact.
