Overview

The 2026 Spring Tour of the Grand Sumo Tournament makes a highly anticipated stop in Himi, Toyama Prefecture. This regional tour, known as “Jungyo,” offers a rare and intimate look at Japan’s national sport outside of the major metropolitan tournaments. Spectators can enjoy a full day of action featuring top-ranked rikishi (wrestlers) from the Makuuchi and Juryo divisions, showcasing the power, tradition, and ritual that have defined sumo for centuries.

Unlike the high-stakes atmosphere of the official 15-day tournaments, the Himi tour event focuses on fan interaction and education. Attendees can witness early morning training sessions, ceremonial ring-entering rituals (Dohyo-iri), and unique demonstrations like Shokkiri—a comedic performance that illustrates forbidden moves. Set against the scenic backdrop of Toyama Bay, this event is a perfect opportunity for both international visitors and local fans to experience the authentic spirit of sumo.

Why Attend

  • Witness the raw power of professional sumo wrestlers up close during morning practice and intense exhibition matches.
  • Experience unique tour-only performances, including comedic Shokkiri matches and traditional Sumo Jinku folk songs.
  • Enjoy a full day of cultural immersion, featuring the rhythmic Yagura-daiko drumming and the grand Yokozuna ring-entering ceremony.
  • Take home a piece of the tradition with specialized souvenir cushions provided for floor-seating ticket holders.
  • Explore the local charm of Himi City, famous for its incredible seafood and stunning views of the Tateyama mountain range.

Tamari seats are ringside floor seats where you sit on a cushion very close to the dohyo. Mass seats (Box seats) are also floor-based but are partitioned sections that can accommodate pairs or small groups.

Is parking available at the Himi City Fureai Sports Center?

There is no parking available directly at the venue. Visitors arriving by car must use the designated temporary parking lots, and a shuttle bus will be available to transport fans to the venue.

What time do the top-division matches usually start?

While the event begins at 9:00 AM with training and lower-division bouts, the Makuuchi (top division) ceremonies and high-ranked matches typically take place in the afternoon, following the Juryo division matches.

Are children allowed to attend the Himi tour event?

Yes, the event is family-friendly. Children aged 3 and above require a paid ticket. Children under 2 can enter for free if they sit on an adult’s lap, but a ticket is required if they need their own seat.

What does the Sumo Bento Exchange Ticket include?

The exchange ticket allows you to pick up a traditional Sumo lunch box and tea at a designated location inside the venue. Please note that an admission ticket is still required to enter the event.
