Background

Shiogama has long been recognized as a vital hub for sake production and seafood trade in Northern Japan, home to the Shiogama Jinja shrine where the deity of brewing is enshrined. This festival serves as a modern tribute to those deep-rooted traditions, emphasizing the collaborative spirit of Miyagi’s brewers. By moving the event to the waterfront at Marine Gate, organizers have created a space where the city’s maritime history and its refined brewing culture intersect beautifully.

The significance of this event lies in its grassroots origin; being organized by a local liquor store ensures an authentic selection that represents the true heart of Miyagi’s craft. Participating breweries such as Hidakami and Hagi no Tsuru are celebrated for their ability to produce sake that complements the delicate flavors of raw fish. This festival is not just a tasting event, but a cultural exchange that supports local artisans and promotes the sustainable growth of Miyagi’s traditional industries.

Faqs

How does the ticket exchange system work at the venue?

Upon arrival at Marine Gate Shiogama, you must exchange your advance ticket for a “spelling ticket” book. Each book provides five individual tickets, and each single ticket can be redeemed for one 60ml pour of sake at any participating brewery booth.

What happens if it rains on the day of the festival?

The Shio GAMA Sake FES is a “rain or shine” event. Because the venue utilizes both the indoor facilities of Marine Gate and specially covered outdoor areas, the festival will proceed regardless of the weather conditions.

Which breweries are participating in the 2026 festival?

The lineup includes a prestigious group of Miyagi brewers such as Urakasumi, Abe Kan, Ichinokura, Hidakami, Mizutori, Koganezawa, and many others, as well as specialty producers like Kanagasaki Medicinal Herb Sake Brewery.

What are the ticket redemption times for both days?

On Saturday, May 23rd, tickets can be exchanged from 10:30 to 17:00. On Sunday, May 24th, the exchange window is from 10:30 to 16:00. Note that redemption ends exactly one hour before the festival closes each day.

Is the venue easily accessible for visitors from outside Miyagi?

Yes, Marine Gate Shiogama is a short walk from Hon-Shiogama Station on the JR Senseki Line. This makes it very convenient for those traveling from Sendai or other parts of the Tohoku region to enjoy the festival without needing a car.
