Background

Hanae Mori Vital Type: The 100th Anniversary of Birth is a major retrospective exhibition scheduled to run from April 15 to July 6, 2026. Marking a century since the birth of the legendary fashion designer Hanae Mori (1926–2022), this exhibition is the first large-scale survey of her work since her passing. Mori was a global pioneer, becoming the first Japanese designer to be accepted into the Chambre Syndicale de la Couture Parisienne and famously bringing Japanese aesthetics, symbolized by her signature butterfly motif, to the international haute couture stage.

The exhibition title, Vital Type, refers to a philosophy Mori introduced in 1961 to describe the vibrant, forward-looking lifestyle of the modern woman. The showcase features approximately 400 works, including her iconic butterfly dresses, costume designs for over 200 films from the golden age of Japanese cinema, and her work for the opera and ballet. By highlighting her use of traditional Japanese textiles like Nishijin-ori and Nagahama Chirimen in Western-style garments, the exhibition illustrates how Mori bridged Eastern and Western cultures through her technical mastery and artistic vision.
