Overview

The Born Creative Festival 2026 marks the grand finale of a groundbreaking series at the Tokyo Metropolitan Theatre. Since its inception in 2017, this festival has lived by the motto that “all humans are born creative,” introducing over 550 works to a diverse audience of 3,000 visitors annually. Artistic Director and composer Dai Fujikura has curated this final installment to be the most ambitious yet, bringing together a global collective of artists to perform music that defies traditional forms and boundaries.

This final episode transforms the theater into a labyrinth of “Rooms,” each offering a distinct sonic world. From the electronic fusion of Polandโ€™s Neo Quartet and the live sampling sessions of Norwayโ€™s Jan Bang to the crystalline flute virtuosity of Americaโ€™s Claire Chase, the festival is a celebration of the “new music” being born right now. Whether you are exploring the experimental chamber music of Ensemble Nomad or the avant-garde sounds of the Quasars Ensemble from Slovakia, this event promises a mysterious and fascinating conclusion to a beloved cultural landmark.

Why Attend

  • Witness the historic final edition of the Born Creative Festival at the Tokyo Metropolitan Theatre, featuring a “greatest hits” lineup of international avant-garde talent.

Faqs

What is the concept behind the name “Born Creative”?

The festival was named by its Artistic Director, Dai Fujikura, to reflect the idea that every human being is born with an innate sense of creativity. The festival aims to present “new sounds” that can be enjoyed by everyone from 0-year-olds to adults, breaking the barrier of difficult-to-understand contemporary music.

Who is Dai Fujikura and what is his role in the festival?

Dai Fujikura is a multi-award-winning Japanese composer based in London. He has served as the Artistic Director since the festival’s founding in 2017, personally inviting international artists and curating the experimental “Room” format that defines the event’s unique structure.

Can I bring young children to all the performances?

Performances in the “Polish Room,” “Norwegian Room,” and both “Flute Rooms” are open to children from 0 years old, with those under 2 watching for free on a parent’s lap. However, the Ensemble Nomad and Slovakia Room sessions do not allow admission for preschool-aged children.

Where is the Tokyo Metropolitan Theatre located?

The theater is located in Nishi-Ikebukuro, Toshima-ku, Tokyo. It is conveniently situated near Ikebukuro Station, one of Tokyo’s major transit hubs, and the specific performances are spread across Theatre East, Theatre West, and the underground Rehearsal Rooms.

What makes the “Norwegian Room” performance unique?

The “Norwegian Room” features a “Live Sampling” session led by Jan Bang, a pioneer of Nordic electronic jazz. This performance involves capturing sounds from other instruments in real-time and manipulating them electronically, creating a one-of-a-kind improvisational experience that will never be repeated.
