Background
The Sendai Aoba Festival was originally a religious festival held at Aoba Shrine, but it was revived in its current form in 1985 to celebrate the 350th anniversary of Date Masamune’s death. It has since grown into a major cultural event that symbolizes the arrival of spring and the resilience of the Sendai community. The “Suzume Odori” performed during the festival is said to have originated from the stonemasons who built Sendai Castle, celebrating its completion with spontaneous dance.
The significance of the 42nd festival lies in its continued preservation of local heritage. The Hon-matsuri parade features eleven massive Yamaboko floats, each uniquely decorated and weighing several tons, alongside a column of armored samurai representing the Date clan. This intricate blend of historical pageantry and lively folk dance makes the Aoba Festival a cornerstone of Northern Japan’s cultural identity.

What is the difference between SS, A, and B seating?
SS seats are the most premium, located on the Wood Deck with table seating, tents for shade, and access to private toilets. A seats are front-row roadway seats offering an up-close view, while B seats are located in the back row. Please note that A and B seats do not have roofs or tents.
Are there specific rules for the May 16th evening performance?
Yes, the May 16th Yoiyama (Evening Festival) is divided into a Daytime Session and an Evening Session. The venue operates a complete clearing system between these two sessions, so those wishing to watch both must have separate tickets for each.
Is the original Tenugui hand towel included with all tickets?
No, the original non-sale Tenugui is only included with specific seat types, such as the SS 4-seater table for the Saturday night session. Most other seat types do not include this item as part of the ticket price.
What should I do if my preferred section is North or South side?
The North side is closer to the Sendai City Hall side of the roadway, while the South side is on the Kokubuncho side. When booking, please specify your preference based on which part of the avenue you wish to be located.
Is there special seating available for wheelchair users?
Yes, there are designated wheelchair-accessible seats in the A-seat and SA-seat sections. These are located on the South side roadway (Kokubuncho side) and the North side (City Hall side) to ensure a safe and accessible viewing experience for all guests.
