The Story and Legacy of Verdi’s Il Trovatore

As one of the achievements of Giuseppe Verdis middle period Il Trovatore is still a very important part of the worldwide opera collection. It has a story written by Salvatore Cammarano. This four-act work has a story about deep anger, wrong identities, hidden family ties and sad love, in 15th-century Spain. The story connects the lives of Count Luna and the singer Manrico—people who both love the noblewoman Leonora—. They do not know they are connected by a terrible secret that Azucena, the gypsy has. Azucenas own mother was killed in a fire years ago.

A Powerful National Co-Production of Il Trovatore

I find this co-production very exciting. This national co-production brings Verdis drama to life under the stage direction of Micho Takagishi, who is known for building deep detailed character relationships and inner portraits. The musical direction of this co-production features conductors Jun Iizaka for regional performances and Yu Kumakura for the Tokyo dates. Audiences will enjoy operatic numbers, including the world-famous Anvil Chorus also called “The Blacksmith’s Chorus”. This Anvil Chorus is performed by professional choruses and notable soloists. The soloists include Hiroaki Fueda as Manrico, Yasuko Sato and Mihoko Kinoshita as Leonora, Kasumi Shimizu and Mutsumi Taniguchi as Azucena and Takashi Aoyama and Uchu Onishi, as Count Luna.

Seeing opera in Japan is a cultural escape. Opera productions unite local and national symphonies, careful stage design and great sound in special concert halls. From the Kanazawa Opera Theater to the sleek Kansai Medical University Large Hall in Osaka and the famous Tokyo Metropolitan Theatre Concert Hall people, from other countries can watch a big national opera team perform at the highest worldwide artistic level.
