Kuni Mikami: A Distinguished Jazz Pianist
Kuni Mikami is a pianist who has spent decades performing around the world. Based in New York Mikami has played with big bands, including the famous Duke Ellington Orchestra and the Lionel Hampton Orchestra. His gentle playing style, understanding of harmony and natural sense of swing have won him acclaim at venues across the globe. For this series Mikami shares his strong connection to American jazz in a way that anyone can enjoy—whether you are just starting out or have been listening for years. The music speaks to all ages from children, to adults making it easy to feel the joy of jazz.
Joined by Nobuto Koshino on bass and Yuki Nakamura on drums the trio performs a program that mixes classic jazz standards with favorite childrens themes anime songs and light classical pieces—everything rearranged using real jazz styles. People in the audience will hear swing classics like “Sing, Sing, Sing” well as familiar Japanese cultural melodies such as “Doraemon” and classical favorites like Tchaikovskys “Waltz of the Flowers.” The performance stays completely professional keeping the sound of live piano, bass and drums while the place where it happens allows, for the natural movements and sounds of young children.
A Family-Friendly Jazz Experience
Attending a live jazz concert in Japan is a cultural experience especially when the live jazz concert takes place in a special civic space like the Muza Kawasaki Civic Exchange Room. In Japan the usual concert hall rules ask for silence so traditional classical or jazz concerts usually do not let families, with infants attend. The live jazz concert series breaks those rules giving a setting where children can freely enjoy the live rhythm and melody while adults can enjoy the top musicianship.
